Prior to joining Superintendent Kathy Hoffman’s administration as Chief of Staff, John Carruth worked in the Vail School District for nearly 25 years. He served as a special education teacher, Assistant Principal, Director of Special Education, and finally Associate Superintendent for fifteen years. John’s spirit of innovation, persistence, and ability to see the big picture have had a huge impact on students in Southern Arizona. John created Vail’s first program for at-risk high school students, championed Vail’s model of “high school choice,” allowing Vail students to attend any of the district’s five unique high schools, and helped create Beyond Textbooks – a digital instructional playbook that is used by hundreds of schools in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, New Mexico, and Alaska. John and his wife split their time between Phoenix and Vail and are the proud parents of two daughters attending the University of Arizona.
